Motor Insurance FAQs

Is motor insurance a legal requirement in the UK?

Yes. It's a legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act to have at least third-party motor insurance for any vehicle driven or kept on a public road in the UK, unless it's declared off-road with a SORN.

What's the difference between third party, third party fire and theft, and comprehensive cover?

Third party covers damage or injury you cause to others only. Third party, fire and theft adds cover if your own vehicle is stolen or damaged by fire. Comprehensive cover adds protection for damage to your own vehicle as well, regardless of fault.

Does my no-claims discount transfer between vehicle types?

No-claims discounts are usually specific to a policy type (for example, car or motorbike) and don't automatically transfer between very different vehicle categories, though insurers vary in how they treat this — always check with the specific insurer.

What is a black box (telematics) insurance policy?

A black box policy uses a telematics device or app to monitor driving behaviour — such as speed, braking and time of day — and can adjust premiums based on how safely the vehicle is driven, often used to reduce costs for younger or newer drivers.
