Property Insurance FAQs
What's the difference between buildings and contents insurance?
Buildings insurance covers the structure of the property itself — walls, roof, windows and fixed fittings. Contents insurance covers your belongings inside the property, such as furniture, electronics and personal items. Home insurance often combines both.
Do landlords need different insurance to homeowners?
Yes. Standard home insurance is typically designed for owner-occupiers and can be invalidated if the property is rented out. Landlord insurance is built for rented property and can include cover for loss of rent, malicious damage by tenants, and landlord liability.
Is unoccupied property insurance necessary?
Standard home insurance policies often restrict or exclude cover if a property is left unoccupied beyond a set period (commonly 30-60 days), since empty properties carry higher risks of damage, vandalism or undetected issues like burst pipes. Specialist unoccupied property insurance is designed to fill that gap.
Does contents insurance cover a student living away from home?
Sometimes a parent's home contents policy extends limited cover to a student's belongings at university, but often with lower limits and exclusions. Dedicated student contents insurance is designed specifically for term-time accommodation.
